Amazon and Mill Industries Launch On-Site Food Waste Recycling System at Whole Foods
Amazon and Mill Industries are bringing a new approach to food waste into Whole Foods Market stores, turning everyday produce scraps into a resource that supports both people and the planet. Through the partnership, Whole Foods Market will become the first grocery retailer to deploy Mill Commercial, a high-capacity, in-store system that processes fruit and vegetable waste directly where it’s generated. Instead of being discarded, food scraps are converted into a nutrient-rich chicken feed ingredient intended for Whole Foods Market’s private-label egg suppliers, creating a closed-loop system that reconnects stores with their agricultural supply chain.
The initiative tackles food waste as both an environmental and operational challenge. Mill Commercial significantly reduces waste volume through dehydration, lowering hauling needs, cutting emissions tied to transportation and disposal, and improving food safety behind the scenes. Its AI-enabled tracking gives stores clearer insight into what is being thrown away and why, supporting smarter ordering decisions and reducing unnecessary surplus. For suppliers, the recycled feed ingredient provides a stable, cost-effective input, while customers benefit from a supply chain designed around reuse rather than disposal. Backed by an investment from Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund, the collaboration represents a practical step toward more circular grocery operations and supports Whole Foods Market’s goal of cutting food waste in half by 2030.
