Americans discarded more than 12 million tons of furniture in a single year, and barely any of it was recycled — a modern sofa combines foam, fabric, wood, metal and glue so tightly that taking it apart can cost more than the recovered materials are worth
In 2018, the most recent year with complete figures, Americans threw out 12.1 million tons of furniture and furnishings. Data from the US Environmental Protection Agency puts the landfilled share at 80.1 per cent, with another 19.5 per cent burned for energy recovery. Recycling accounted for 40,000 tons. Out of twelve million.
