Clyde estuary could cause bigger floods for Glasgow than predicted

Not all coastal cities are created equal when it comes to tidal flood risk – and it turns out size really does matter.

That’s the key finding from a new University of Glasgow study on the Clyde Estuary, which warns that bigger estuaries may face far greater flooding danger as sea levels continue to rise.

Researchers used sophisticated modelling to simulate future flooding along the Clyde, one of the UK’s largest estuaries, and found that vast volumes of tidal water could spill onto land during extreme weather events.

By 2100, under a high emissions scenario, the Clyde could see sea levels rise by 85cm, increasing the flood zone from 13.6 square kilometres today to 19.2 square kilometres.
