CURA Unveils Electrochemical Technology To Slash Cement Emissions By 85%
CURA, a Canadian climate technology startup developing electrochemical processes for low-carbon cement production, has emerged from stealth with a method it says can cut cement-related CO2 emissions by as much as 85%.
The cement sector accounts for more than 8% of global CO2 emissions, largely due to process emissions released when limestone is heated to produce lime. The company’s approach uses electricity to split limestone into zero-carbon lime and a pure CO2 stream, addressing emissions before the kiln and enabling manufacturers to integrate the process with existing production infrastructure.
The captured CO2 can be permanently stored or used in industrial applications, while the resulting lime feeds into the production of low-carbon cement with lower overall energy demand.
