Germany’s largest distribution grid operator E.ON has completed the rollout of a digital twin across all its distribution system operators, covering over 700,000 kilometres of grid.

Built using a central data platform powered by smart grid software from envelio, the project virtually maps more than one-third of Germany’s distribution grid.

The digital twin evaluates data from over 55 million network components and 180,000 measuring devices, supporting grid planning, connection and operation.

It enables near-instant processing of grid connection requests for wind turbines, solar PV systems, heat pumps and EV chargers. In 2024 alone, the E.ON network handled more than 410,000 such requests.
