EU calls for feedback on impact of SUPD

The European Commission has launched a public consultation and call for evidence to evaluate the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD).

The SUPD has been in force since 2021, when it banned the 10 single-use plastic items most commonly found thrown away on beaches, as well as products made from oxo-degradable plastic and fishing gear containing plastic.

Cotton bud sticks, cutlery, plates, stirrers, straws, balloon sticks, food and beverage containers made of expanded polystyrene, all products made of oxo-degradable plastics and discarded fishing gear represent at least 70% of all marine litter in the EU.

The Commission is required by law to will carry out a comprehensive evaluation of the SUPD by July 2027. The evaluation will examine the Directive’s effectiveness, efficiency, relevance, coherence and EU added value. The findings of the evaluation will help to decide if new rules are necessary.
