EU Green Week 2025: Why the Circular Economy Needs Reverse Vending Machines?
This week, policymakers, businesses, and citizens across Europe are coming together for #EUGreenWeek – the EU’s flagship environmental event. The 2025 theme? “Circular solutions for a competitive EU.” At Envipco, this isn’t just talk – it’s the world we help build every day.
Circular Economy: From Concept to Regulation
The EU’s Circular Economy Action Plan has been in motion since 2020, but during this year’s Green Week, it became clear: circularity is no longer optional – it’s the strategy.
A few key developments:
Mandatory Deposit Return Systems (DRS) by 2029: Under the revised Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) adopted in April 2024, all EU Member States must implement DRS for plastic bottles and cans. The goal? Collect at least 90% of these containers and ensure they’re actually recycled – not landfilled or incinerated.
Recycled Content Targets: The same regulation mandates a minimum of 25% recycled plastic in PET bottles by 2025, and 30% by 2030. But recycled content requires high-quality feedstock – which only well-functioning DRS systems can reliably provide.
Digital Product Passports & Green Public Procurement: Updates to the Circular Economy Action Plan include efforts to push circularity through smarter product design, greater transparency, and government-led procurement criteria that favor sustainable materials and closed-loop systems.
