EV sales up but still trail government target

New figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales continued to grow in June, with registrations up 39.1% year-on-year.

BEVs accounted for 24.8% of all new vehicle sales last month, helping the overall market rise by 6.7% to 191,316 units – its highest level since 2019.

Despite the progress, BEV uptake remains behind the government’s 28% target for 2025. In the first half of the year, BEVs captured 21.6% of the market, suggesting further growth is needed to meet the UK’s climate commitments.

Sheena McGuinness, Co-head of Energy and Natural Resources at RSM UK, said: “New electric vehicle (EV) registrations in June continued the upward trend of the previous month, with EV market share continuing to grow. This growth is significant ahead of the approaching 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel cars, with the latest uptick in EVs suggesting that consumers and manufacturers are adapting to policy on reducing carbon emissions.”
