How Europe’s Secondhand Clothes Are Trashing Romania
Romanian environmental authorities say the country is becoming a dumping ground for waste that enters the country labeled as used clothing.
Environmental inspectors have lodged complaints against 11 local companies accused of importing dirty, poorly sorted textiles. In many cases, this waste ends up dumped in rivers and fields.
OCCRP traced one supply chain of used textiles from a company based in Germany, which says it collects secondhand clothes for environmental reasons, to Romania, where environmental inspectors said its wares were dirty, stained, and not properly sorted.
Europe’s used-clothing trade is not closely monitored and regulations differ from country to country, making it difficult to enforce standards of cleanliness.
