In 1981, researchers mapped Mammoth Cave’s underground drainage; later dye-tracing studies showed about 60% of its aquifer recharge area lies beyond park boundaries
Rain falling miles beyond Mammoth Cave National Park can disappear through sinkholes, travel along hidden underground passages and eventually enter the cave system. Fluorescent dye-tracing studies helped scientists map these connections and showed that about 60% of the aquifer’s recharge area extends beyond the park’s protected boundaries.
