For two decades, the construction industry has chased a waste target of keeping material out of landfill. By that measure, the job is very nearly done. A new analysis by SmartWaste, BRE’s sustainability data platform for the sector, draws on almost 4,800 UK projects worth a total of £34bn and completed between 2016 and 2025. It shows that the typical project now diverts 99.5 per cent of its waste from landfill. Across these projects, sending waste to landfill was the exception. This is an industry success built on better segregation, stronger recovery markets and tighter targets.
