NGED expands EV charging network at substations
National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) is rolling out over 182 new EV charging bays across 83 primary substations and eight offices, bolstering one of the UK’s largest privately-owned EV charging networks.
With a £13 million investment, NGED will increase its total charging bays to 444, strategically placed to support its frontline workforce across the South West, South Wales and the Midlands.
The utility company already operates a fleet of more than 1,000 electric vehicles, including 400 vans and 600 cars, and plans to expand further with new commercial models such as the Skoda Enyaq AWD and Ford Explorer.
By using substations as EV charging points, NGED aims to offer its teams improved access to rapid charging infrastructure—particularly on frequently used urban and rural routes.
The goal is to ensure that operational staff are always within 10 miles of a reliable NGED-operated charger.
