Northern Ireland local authority collected municipal waste management statistics released 11/12/25

The key points are:

Northern Ireland’s councils collected 1,010,410 tonnes of waste during 2024/25 which was 1.0% higher than the amount collected in 2023/24. During 2024/25, half (50.4%) of the waste collected by councils was sent for recycling which was similar to the recycling rate reported in 2023/24.
The landfill rate for waste collected by councils was 14.0% in 2024/25, a fall from 74.0% in 2006/07 and 18.4% in 2023/24.
In 2024/25, over one third (34.3%) of waste arisings were sent for energy recovery. This compares to 29.7% in 2023/24 and 0.4% in 2009/10.
Household waste accounted for 86.9% of all local authority collected waste during 2024/25. The recycling rate for household waste was 51.0% whilst the landfill rate for household waste was 13.8%.
Belfast generated the smallest amount of household waste per capita at 397 kg whilst Antrim & Newtownabbey recorded the largest at 555 kg per capita.
There were 71,828 tonnes of biodegradable waste sent to landfill during 2024/25, a decrease of 24.7% from the quantity reported in 2023/24 (95,425 tonnes).
