Eco-friendly wood-burning stoves might not be as clean as you think.

A new study has warned that even top-rated “eco-design” stoves are pumping harmful pollutants into our homes – and in some cases, they could be doing more damage than the old-school models they’re meant to replace.

Researchers from the University of Surrey’s Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE) monitored real homes across Guildford using everything from open fires to modern stoves burning wood briquettes, kiln-dried logs and smokeless coal.

What they found should give pause to any household banking on solid fuel for winter warmth.
