The Romanian textile reuse sector has experienced dynamic changes in the past years. As part of the European Green Deal and circular economy objectives, textile reuse remains a key pillar in the attempt to reduce waste, extend the lifecycle of products, and minimize resource consumption. Yet, despite the political ambitions, the sector faces new and complex challenges — many of which have intensified in 2025.
The Schengen Paradox: Easier Borders, Harder Control
With Romania’s accession to Schengen (at least partially with air and maritime borders for now, and road borders soon), market players initially expected improved logistics and smoother cross-border operations. However, this liberalization has also opened the door for an increasing volume of illegal or semi-legal imports of second-hand and low-quality textiles.
