Silent energy storage wins over Stockport neighbours
An energy storage station in Stockport, UK, is winning praise for what it doesn’t do—make noise.
Just 100 meters from residential homes, Envision Energy’s large-scale energy storage system has demonstrated near-silent operation, meeting the growing demand for low-impact renewable energy infrastructure close to urban areas.
In a midnight full-load test—when ambient noise is at its lowest—field measurements showed that the system’s noise output was 5 decibels (dB) below local background levels.
“During Stockport’s tranquil nights, the large-scale storage equipment blended seamlessly into the environmental background noise,” the company stated.
Noise control is increasingly critical for community acceptance, with even a few decibels over legal limits threatening to halt energy projects.
AC systems are typically the loudest component in energy storage setups and many exceed 70 dBA, roughly the sound of a running vacuum cleaner.
