In the great machine of the circular economy, what’s the one part we couldn’t do without?

For me it’s not the product designers, or the policy gurus, or even the pioneering material scientists. It’s the resources and waste management sector — the behind-the-scenes heroes that keeps the loops spinning. As a Chartered Resource and Waste Manager at CIWM perhaps this answer is not a surprise – but let me tell you why this is the case.

Often misunderstood as the ‘end of the line,’ or as the bit that just throws things away when we have finished, this sector is quietly doing the most to enable circular principles — from reuse and repair to recycling and regeneration. Without it, we wouldn’t have a circular economy. We’d just have circular wishful thinking.

So let’s answer the big question:

Is the resources and waste sector the linchpin of the circular economy?

Yes. Unequivocally. Unquestionably. Undoubtedly.
