The Economic and Environmental Costs of Plastic Waste
Plastic waste is one of the most pressing material challenges of our time. Since mass production began in earnest after World War II, plastic has embedded itself into almost every sector of the global economy: packaging, construction, healthcare, agriculture, electronics, and beyond. Its combination of low cost, light weight, and near-infinite design flexibility made it indispensable. The problem is that these same qualities make it extraordinarily difficult to recover, reuse, or break down once discarded.
This article examines what the data actually says about plastic production, waste generation, greenhouse gas emissions, and economic damage. It also looks at where that damage falls hardest and what practical steps businesses and waste management operations can take to address it.
