To end the plastic crisis, we need new business models based on reuse

April 28 – Resource scarcity is no longer a future risk. It is a present crisis disrupting global commerce and geopolitical stability. The unchecked extraction and manufacturing of materials is driving up costs, destabilising supply chains, and exposing businesses to financial and regulatory risks, while also causing catastrophic environmental and social impacts.

For over 40 years, recycling has been aggressively marketed as the solution to our waste and resource woes. But less than 9% of global plastic waste is successfully recycled, while the rest pollutes landfills, oceans and supply chains in every corner of the Earth. At its best, recycling can only deliver 31% greenhouse gas reductions from the packaging sector, whereas reuse can cut single-use packaging production by 90% and reduce emissions by up to 80% compared with single-use alternatives. In other words, recycling sustains the take-make-waste economy – it does not disrupt it.
