World could overshoot 1.5°C target by 2028
The world is on course to breach the 1.5°C global warming threshold within the next three years, according to a stark new report from over 60 international scientists.
Published in Earth System Science Data, the latest climate assessment presents a sobering picture of accelerating climate change and shrinking chances of staying within the Paris Agreement’s goals.
The findings show “human-induced global warming rates are at their highest historical level,” with warming reaching 0.27°C per decade from 2015 to 2024.
Last year marked the first time the global annual average temperature exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
“The report helps fill a gap caused by the long publication timeline of IPCC reports,” said Aurélien Ribes, co-author and researcher at France’s National Center for Meteorological Research.
